For the second time in the past two years, the German program at 51福利社 was awarded a grant from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to hold events on campus in conjunction with the Embassy鈥檚 Wunderbar together campaign celebrating the German American friendship.

The 51福利社 German program and the Art Department collaborated this past fall on a series of student-centered events from Nov. 4-8聽celebrating and discussing 100 years of Bauhaus design.

We explored the lives of the women of Bauhaus. Students from the Art department curated an exceptional and very well-received exhibition on the women of Bauhaus featuring photographs and artifacts along with texts written by 51福利社 art students and German students. Other activities included an art competition with Bauhaus-inspired art that drew many wonderful entries from our students on campus.

Catherine Girard from Art History and German program coordinator Jody Stewart-Strobelt gave a talk at the Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies Education Center on Gender at the Bauhaus. A panel discussion with art professors and community experts on Bauhaus was held, and the German club with generous support from the School of Global Learning sponsored a delicious and delightful coffee talk that drew many visitors eager to learn more about the Women of Bauhaus.

Collage of historical photos Los Angeles artist Matt Lipps will be on campus at聽noon on Thursday, Apr. 18, 2019,聽in the Art Building Auditorium (room 116) to talk about his work.

Matt Lipps has collected photographs from both high and low sources like Time and Life magazines, and art history books since childhood. With these images, Lipps builds three-dimensional collages and tableaus, then photographs them using theatrical techniques with a large format analog camera. This unique hybrid of sculpture and photography breathes a new life into familiar and historical images. The thought-provoking arrangement of forms and figures help to reveal how these images have reflected and shaped our culture.

Matt Lipps was born in Los Angeles, California, where he currently lives and works. He earned his BFA in Photography from California State University, Long Beach in 1998 and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine. He teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles, and San Francisco State University.

A faculty-led student project was presented this past April at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Printmaking Conference in Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho鈥攈osted by University of Idaho (U of I) and Washington State University (WSU). The project entailed the showcasing of 51福利社 student artwork from six students in the ART 396 Unconventional Printmaking course. This was a unique opportunity, as it was a collaboration from three colleges: CALE, CSTEM,聽and CSS, and represented multiple disciplines. Adjunct Reinaldo Gil Zambrano created the “Unconventional Printmaking” course with this project in mind. The focus was to make art that could be displayed in unconventional places (think street art). For this course, 51福利社 students carved out large woodblocks, inked/printed designs on paper, trimmed their works and pasted/installed three murals in public spaces.

The mural shown above was hung on the 51福利社 campus near the Computing & Engineering Building (CEB).
