Where does truth lie? Artists enrolled in ART 313: Art Through Time explored the notion of hidden truth鈥揳 conceptual thread referencing the Hermeneutics of Suspicion that weaves throughout Modernism. Painting, sculpture, photography, collage, digital illustration, and textile-based practices were employed to navigate this theme. Additionally, the artists engaged in scholarly research as a creative process to bolster their approach to making.

Visitors are invited to pause with the work鈥搑eflect鈥揳nd consider the same prompt issued to the artists: what, to you, is hidden truth?

Students investigated the many written components necessary to create text for art shows, gallery exhibits, and museum collections. Throughout this project, students created their own narratives to describe the visual art in the exhibit, understanding that narratives take both visual and textual form.

The students of ART 313 鈥淎rt Across Time: 17^th century-Present” investigated the complex nuances associated with the Rococo movement.

Examining French aristocracy, the influence of 18^th century Chinese design, and exploring the delicate intricacies of passion, students dove into the labyrinth of iconography that is 鈥淩ococo.鈥� While conducting scholarly research on specific works of art, students recreated aspects of their selected research topic through the age-old metal-manipulation technique 鈥渞epouss茅.鈥� Employing an assortment of mark making techniques, students artfully shaped a flat piece of metal into a specified Rococo scene.

When visiting the JFK Library鈥檚 Gallery, visitors may view repouss茅 designs depicting imagery iconic of the Rococo art period.

The students of ART 312 鈥淎rt Across Time: Prehistory-17th Century鈥� have engaged with the rise of Fresco Secco (dry fresco) and the transition to Buon Fresco (wet fresco) in ancient art.

Upon learning about frescoes created by the ancient Minoans through the Roman Empire, students conducted research into the techniques, purpose, and locations of specific frescoes. For Research Project #2, students investigated and researched a fresco of their choosing created between 1,700 BCE to the Fourth Pompeian Style (c. 60 AD). As students conducted research, they examined the culture, archeological site, and purpose of their selected fresco. Post-research, students replicated their fresco by creating a Buon Fresco of their own.

When visiting the JFK Library Gallery, visitors may view handmade frescoes depicting scenes ranging from the wall art of Pompeii to the buried temples of Akrotiri.

The students of ART 312 鈥淎rt Across Time: Prehistory-17^th century鈥� spent weeks engaged in the analysis of artifacts containing ancient writing. Ranging from Sumerian Cuneiform to Egyptian hieroglyphics, students not only ascertained how early writing cultivated cultural progress, but investigated unique methodologies employed to disperse ancient text, such as cylinder seals. Each student conducted independent research on an ancient civilization and determined how specific cultures and regions utilized a specific mode of writing. Students then practiced applied learning by molding a cylinder seal out of clay and carving the seal with the ancient text being researched. At the Gallery in the JFK Library, visitors may view handmade cylinder seals containing samples of writing with such excerpts as The Epic of Gilgamesh, Akkadian poetry by princess/priestess Enheduanna, The Book of the Dead of ancient Egypt, or even a Sumerian recipe for bread; all recreated in the language and script of the original artifact.
