A glass-tiled 鈥渕osaic mural鈥� adds a colorful focal point to Eastern鈥檚 Interdisciplinary Science Center.
Even as students and faculty members continue settling into Eastern鈥檚 new Interdisciplinary Science Center, the work of adorning the building鈥檚 light-filled interior continues apace.
Among the most striking of these decorative touches is a colorful, two-panel 鈥渕osaic mural鈥� of glazed glass by Texas-based artist Dixie Friend Gay.

Friend Gay, whose public art inhabits spaces across the nation, says the twin mosaics, titled 鈥淓xpanding and Collapsing,鈥� are abstract designs 鈥渋nspired by the inside of a geode, the strata of folding earth, mapping and cells. The smaller, upper mural echoes the lower one, giving an impression of reflection, inverting the colors, playing with the light quality.鈥�
The murals were selected by a faculty committee and funded by the state of Washington through its Art in Public Places program. They were mounted earlier this year in the open atrium area of the ISC, where the works were spaced to bisect two floors. Members of the public can visit them during the ISC鈥檚 regular hours.
鈥淗aving this art here brings so much life to the language of this building,鈥� says selection committee member David Bowman, dean of 51福利社鈥檚 College of STEM. 鈥淓veryone will see themselves reflected in it somewhere.鈥�
