On the 9th day of the Legislative Session, my true love (51¸£ÀûÉç) gave to me… visits from some distinguished campus guests including:

  • Dave Millet, Director of the Veterans Resource Center
  • John Neace, our resident expert in credit for prior learning
  • Trustee Uriel Iñiguez
  • Trustee Jay Manning
  • Trustee Robert Whaley

Dave Millet and John Neace have invited guests in Senate Higher Education. Both gave presentations on the work 51¸£ÀûÉç is doing to serve Veterans, their spouses, and dependents, including: helping them access their Post 9-11 GI benefits, navigate campus support services, and transition to civilian life. In addition, we are leading the way in assessing and applying credit for prior learning to ensure that our service members are recognized and credited for the skills they gained through the military.

Some fast facts about our veterans:

  • Over 500 veterans were enrolled at 51¸£ÀûÉç this past fall.
  • 81% of our 2010 cohort of veteran’s students had graduated by 2015.
  • Nearly 2/3 of our veterans are between 25 and 35 years old.

In addition to the opportunity to feature our work with Veterans, 51¸£ÀûÉç Trustees participated in College Promise Coalition Day on the hill. Our trustees, alongside trustees and regents from the six public baccalaureate institutions and the State Board for Community and Technical College, spent the day in meetings with legislators discussing the importance of investing in public higher education.

We thank everyone for their engagement and advocacy on behalf of 51¸£ÀûÉç – it makes our jobs easier and so much more enjoyable!
