The English Secondary Add-on Endorsement is for Washington State certified teachers. This low-residency summer program is 40 credits and intended for K-12 teachers who already hold teaching endorsements in disciplines other than English.

Changes in K-12 education, namely the shift to Common Core State Standards, have created this need for current public school teachers. Now more than ever, all K-12 teachers, regardless of discipline, are expected to teach English language arts skills such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. With these new expectations, there is an increased need for teachers to earn an English/Secondary Add-on Endorsement.

This undergraduate minor satisfies the endorsement for grades 5–12.
This add-on endorsement is for post-baccalaureate students who currently possess a Washington State Teaching Certificate.

Specific Program Grade Requirements: Required grade minimum for each of the following courses is ≥C. Please note the following exceptions: ,  require a grade ≥B.

ENGL聽250. INTRODUCTION TO GENRE. 5 Credits.

Notes: required for all English Studies majors.
Exploration of the concept of genre in literature and rhetoric.

ENGL聽350. SHAKESPEARE. 5 Credits.

Pre-requisites: ENGL 201 and ENGL 271 or CRWR 210.
Reading and interpretation of the principal comedies, histories, tragedies, and sonnets of Shakespeare; usually includes intensive study of one play.

ENGL聽486. INTEGRATED ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS METHODS I. 5 Credits.

Introduces Teacher Candidates in English Education to the six language arts: visual representation and viewing, reading and writing, speaking and listening.

ENGL聽347. WORLD LITERATURES. 5 Credits.

Pre-requisites: ENGL 201.
The literature in this course represents a broad range of cultures and ethnicities. Readings of works in a variety of genre from across history and around the globe. Most syllabi in this course do not include British or American texts as those are considered in other surveys.
