Minor in Photography

About

The minor in Photography provides undergraduate students with a rigorous academic and hands-on program of study. This program offers students the opportunity to develop both technical and conceptual skills in one of the dominant media of our time. With courses selected from the Art and Design departments, this multidisciplinary curriculum helps students build important creative and professional skills, including but not limited to: camera operation, digital editing workflow, studio/on-location lighting, project development, portfolio preparation, image presentation/exhibition, and photographic theory.

This minor will prepare students to immediately utilize these skills in a wide variety of personal and professional applications. The inherent flexibility and ubiquity of the photographic medium make this minor incredibly valuable for students from diverse educational backgrounds and professional trajectories.

ART聽201. ART AND TECHNOLOGY. 5 Credits.

Builds digital skills while learning the elements and principles of art. Explores digital tools and methods to create two-dimensional imagery using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Projects are made for digital and print methods. This foundational art course teaches digital techniques used in various fields of visual art.

ART聽308. PHOTOGRAPHY: BLACK AND WHITE. 4 Credits.

Pre-requisites: sophomore standing. Corequisite: ART 308L.
Serves as an introduction to the rich tradition of analog photography. Using film cameras and the black-and-white darkroom students learn the skills necessary to photograph, develop, and print their own images. Instruction includes technique, but also a primer, the history, and theory of the photographic image. Emphasis is put on creative expression and the artistic application of black-and-white photography. Companion course to ART 308L.

DESN聽200. VISUAL THINKING + MAKING. 5 Credits.

Pre-requisites: ENGL 101.
Satisfies: a BACR for humanities and arts.
Designed to enhance students' creative problem-solving skills through hands-on projects. Encourages students to explore non-linear thinking strategies and engage in the creative production of visual artifacts.

DESN聽350. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY. 5 Credits.

Pre-requisites: junior standing or instructor permission.
This class will have an experimental and philosophical approach. Students will use digital imaging mediums for effective communication and image design. Working within the medium of digital photography, students will engage in strategies and philosophies of vision, light/shadow, reproduction, editing and presentation.
